Blue Whale / Balaenoptera musculus

Blue Whale

The blue whales tongue alone can weigh as much as an elephant, and their hearts, as much as an car!
The blue whale eats about 4-8 tons of krill a day.

Blue whales look true blue underwater, but on the surface their colouring is more a mottled blue-grey. Their underbellies take on a yellowish mould from the millions of micro-organisms that take up residence in their skin.

When a blue whale exhales, the spray from its blow-hole can reach nearly 30 ft into the air.
Blue whale calves enter the world already ranking among the planet's largest creatures. After about a year inside its mother's womb, a baby blue whale emerges weighing up to 3 tons and 25 ft!

Blue whales have few predators but are known to fall victim to attacks by sharks and killer whales, and many are injured or die each year from impacts with large ships.
Blue whales are currently classified as endangered.

A blue whale can survive for up to 80-90 years, they are carnivorous and their group name is a pod.
