Blue Marlin / Makaira nigricans

Blue Marlin

The blue marlin is one of the largest and most beautiful fish in the sea, they spend most of their life time far out.

The strikingly beautiful blue marlin is the largest of the Atlantic marlins and one of the biggest fish in the world. Females, which are significantly larger than males, can reach 14 feet!
They are so-called blue-water fish, spending most of their lives far out at sea. They are also highly migratory, and will follow warm ocean currents for hundreds and even thousands of miles.

Blue marlins prefer the higher temperature of surface waters, feeding on mackerel and tuna, but will also dive deep to eat squid. They are among the fastest fish in the ocean, and use their speared noses to slash through dense schools, to stun and wound victims.

These fish are carnivores, in a group they are given the name of a school, because marlins are so fast, us humans, use this as a fishing sport to catch them, and also see who can catch the largest marlin.

Many people make the mistake and confuse themselves with sword fish and the blue marlin, here is the differences.

Marlins have a single dorsal fin that connects along the fish’s back to a short, soft-looking ridge.
Swordfish, on the other hand, have a dorsal fin more like a shark, and even extends far up, looking somewhat like a feather.

Also there is another one too called a sailfish, which is easy not to mix up because it's dorsal fin is very large and very much like a sail!
