ALBATROSS

ALBATROSSES - (Latin) Diomedeidae

This gigantic bird has the longest wing span of ANY bird, and are a spectacular site!

These amazing birds have lived for a long life span of 50 years, When these birds are in a large group they are called a flock.

Some albatross species were heavily hunted for feathers that were used as down and in the manufacture of women's hats!   Also Albatrosses drink salt water, as do some other sea birds, this bird is a carnivore too.
An albatrosses wingspan are so big because they can be used to glide across the oceans and strong winds without a break and even keep going for hours!!
Albatrosses are rarely seen on land apart from mating seasons to raise their young.
